Biography

j.frede (Pronounced J. Fred)

Born in 1975 in Hobbs, New Mexico, j.frede has lived and worked in Los Angeles since 2002. Previous to Los Angeles Frede lived in Denver, Colorado and a short stint in Europe. During the 1990ís he worked primarily in sound, sound art and performance with his discipline focus shifting to Installation, Sculpture and Photography upon moving to Los Angeles.

The work of j.frede has been presented throughout the United States and Europe including such institutions as The Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art, Soundvision Gallery (Portland, OR), Phantom Galleries (Long Beach, CA), Ausland (Berlin, German), Machine Project (Los Angeles), RE:FORM SCHOOL (NYC)  and more.

2010 saw the release of his first book, American Idle which consists of two separate journals he maintained in 2006/2007 while working as a cab driver in Los Angeles as well as a weekly journal of observations about his experience commuting in Los Angeles on a motorcycle.

The later journal has been continued as a weekly photoblog on The Citrus Report website where Frede is also a contributing writer.

In 2010 he produced and published illiteral a limited art edition that combines his conceptual work and the written word. Conceived and produced for RE:FORM SCHOOL exhibition in NYC.

Continuing his work in sculpture and sound Study for Readymades No.01 was shown at Phantom Galleries in Long Beach. The work addresses Duchamp’s concept and combines both the sculptural element and the audio translation of the sculpture itself.

j.frede continues to work in various mediums in Los Angeles.
