A Siren Song for Parthenope
undertow installation
August 2004

location:
Soundwalk 2004
Long Beach, CA

a Siren Song for Parthenope was conceived specifically for the Long Beach Soundwalk 2004. Taking to mind the location of the soundwalk in relation to the ocean, I felt it was only fitting to create an installation that would pay homage to the deadly song of Sirens. In particular Parthenope, who is said to have drowned herself in response to Ulysses escape from their song.

A composition was written using accordion and female voice. Arranging the recordings into 6 channels the completed work will flow through out the sound bed, creating an angelic dronescape shifting and flowing from front to back and side to side.

my first contained sound sculpture that isnt a full size sound installation. still working with lowercase sound, this piece explores the sonic similarities of traffic noise and oceanic sounds. all of the recordings for the piece were made under overpasses in Los Angeles. both open air microphones and contact microphones were used to capture the various textures created by the fast moving traffic overhead.

location:
a day of attention festival
Los Angeles, CA

The "evidence" video installation is part of his ongoing series of audio/video performances titled repetitions. The repetitions series consists of repetitive motion captured on video or film along with the recorded audio that is processed looped and constructed into a composition in real-time. While the initial idea for the repetitions series was to be performance based, evidence was presented as an installation piece. The evidence footage was filmed from j.frede's home in downtown los angeles of a LAPD helicopter that was circling over a crime scene, the audio contains the sounds of two other helicopters that were directly over his house and are not visible in the film.

12 note composition for sines
visual soundings series
October 2001

location:
Museum of Contemporary Art Denver
Denver, CO

The 12-note Composition for Sine's proposed is a sound design installation based on Schönberg's piano composition method of the same name. Adapted for sine waves to explore the change in the audio properties when multiple sines are played simultaneously. The installations technical needs consist of 4 compact disc players, 8 speakers, and the composition divided into 4 sections. The audio will consist of unobtrusive sine waves that move in and out of each other, working with a large range of sound including frequencies that are inaudible to the human ears. Thus, creating an atmosphere that is thought provoking and interactive, due to its acoustic properties.

urban ambience relocation project
assemble festival
June 2001

location:
Thunder Basin, WY

The Urban Ambience Relocation Project consisted of 3 wooden boxes that housed tape decks playing audio recorded in the Denver Metro area. The installation was created to create an urban atmosphere in a rural setting making a unique listening environment. the scene of the UARP was the skeletal remains of a forest that had burned down 10 years prior. The audio was subtle, cars in the distance, low chatter, footsteps, and conversations. The installation was located about 1 mile away from the electronic music festival Trust:Assemble, as was accessible 24 hours a day throughout the weeklong festival. Nighttime seemed to be the best time to visit the UARP site, as the darkness and natural environment created a wonderful experience. The UARP installation was referred to as "the highlight of the festival..." from the festivals curator's.
