Postcard Series no.001 - Reclamation
4x6 postcard
About the photo:
Reclamation no.23 is from the ongoing Reclamation study that is based on plants reclaiming manmade materials.
A diary is a means of recording our history, moments that are lost each
and every day, our passions and ideas, our frustrations and
inspirations, people we’ve seen, places we’ve visited. I have kept a
diary since I was twelve years old, never missing a day since 1976. No
matter where I am nor at what hour, I still record each day with a fine
black fountain pen.In 2000 I released a series of live recordings, ‘Diary,’ on CD
(Sulphur Records) to accompany a UK tour where I incorporated some of these very
personal entries into public performances. Much of my work experiments
with diverse media in order to search out, find, reveal, process,
distort and re-present elements of our environment, to make the
ordinary extraordinary.

I dreamt that the artist J.Frede had rewritten my diary in sound. He
had created a delightfully impressive re-interpretation of the original
Diary CD, transforming and expanding the music into a sonic reflection
of cloudy elegance. When I woke up I wished it were true.

unprepared piano explores the sound created during a piano tuning.
Working with professional piano tuner David Nereson, j.frede
recorded a tuning session. The source recordings were then edited,
sampled, cut-up and arranged into compositions using a variety of
music software. The completed album consists both of composed
tracks and dry tunings. The original recordings were made on
June 13th, 2001. The piano used was a -1902- Hardman Upright. about the crest series packaging - the first in the "crest series" packaging. Each package is hand

review excerpt:
"Hollowed and spatial ambient noise construction abound on j.frede's latest amazing full-length. Similar to the lighter drones of fellow artist Radiosonde. j.frede slyly intensifies his noisy augmentations, creating ploddingly destructive sonic crashing or brief minimalist cessations of audibility. Dark foghorn-esque moans and metallic footsteps are indicative of ability to puncture the ear with the intricacies of of sound while building a large wall of lo-fi noise. With execllent transparent packaging in the bargain, this is one of my favorite releases in experimental sound this year.

A: Recorded during the self annihilation tour 1998, sounds sampled from a draw bridge near 7hz.
B: Source recordings from live Annik performance at Chernobyl Tone Gallery in Denver, CO 1999
review:
"The images on the cover and label of 'isolate' are overlaid and drawn over maps - among the few names visible is Los Alamos. This dark, almost mythical, place is apporpiate for the isolationist ambient on this single. The two short tracks are very strong - side a 'live @7hz' builds from a deep rumbling wind like noise through a period with subterranean banging and clatters which emerges and grows to a noisy crackling climax that fades into a pulsing jet engine. Which just seems to go on and on, until you realise that there is a lock groove. 'Plainscape' on side b is simpler, though with a more immediate impact. Two loops are set running - one a high tone metallic chord that could come from a soundtrack and whose complexity becomes apparent as it cycles on, the other a deeper, slow pulse. These run through most of the track, sometimes joined by distortion, changing phase. In the latter part a clicking sequence appears which is echoed and phased, eventually taking centre stage and caught in the final groove. The vinyl clicks add a random glitchy surface - making this an interesting way to get some dark ambience. "
title: AMERICAN IDLE author: j.frede year: 2009 ISBN: 000-0-000000-0-0 publisher: Frederick Publishing format: Perfect Bound Paperback edition: 100 copies
info:
AMERICAN IDLE is a collection of two separate journals kept from 2006-2007. The first of which was the Taxi Travel Logs, documenting the time j.frede spent as a Taxi Driver in the city of angels. Driving mostly at night in central LA and Hollywood, the journals present things he saw, people I met and a slight insight into the world of Cab Drivers.
The second set of journals are from a blog that was titled Eyespy documenting his commute from East Los Angeles to West Los Angeles daily. The entries are from the perspective of making the commute on a motorcycle which decreases the travel time but brings a great deal more danger into the picture.

Introduction Except: “You hold in your hands now a collection of emails I sent back periodically to friends and family during my trip. Some grammar and awkward segments have been treated, but more or less the text has been left raw to reflect the progression of my involvement with the writing and eventual burn out of my wandering spirit. I’ve also included at the beginning of each chapter some snippets from my personal journal. Although I could never completely convey the immensity of my time on the road I hope you enjoy this account and that it inspires you to take on some travel of your own.”
