apostates; curse series
8 " x 8 " - typewritten paper
2006

The Curse Series is based on the paintings of artist Brion Gysin, which combined Japanese and Arabic calligraphy and was composed based on a curse placed on him in Morocco in 1958. The technique requires filling a page of paper side to side from the top to the bottom then turning the page 90 degrees and continuing until the text is layered four times.

The curse series is Typewritten on paper. Apostates , the first in the curse series, contains the United States Constitution and sections from the Quron that govern Islamic Law.

The title Apostates works as a double agent in this piece meaning its traditional form of someone that formerly disaffiliates themselves from religion, as well as a reference to William S. Burroughs writings of Apomorphine.

I have completed a number of other pieces in the curse series with topics ranging form past love affairs to philosophy. I plan to continue my work on this series.
